The Open Data Boot Camp in Delhi on September 5th-7th 2014 provided a platform for journalists, technology professionals and civil society professionals collaboratively learn about using data. The Boot Camp was co-hosted by the International Center for Journalists, the Hindustan Times, Hacks/Hackers New Delhi, Data{Meet}, and the 9.9 School of Communication.

The participants were given hands-on training to explore and extract data from various sources of data which are easily available online but are often overlooked due to various reasons. Different tools were introduced to clean and visualize data. The participants were then teamed up to work on different ideas which were proposed by them.

Abhinav Tyagi and Susan Koshy from the Centre for Culture Media and Governance along with Shyamanuja Das from Juxt Consult, Mohit Arora from FrySquare, Sunny Kumar Maurya, an Engineering Graduate, Anish Das, a Mass Communication student teamed up to study the shareholding patterns in India’s Top Media and Entertainment Companies. The final report of the presentation can found here.

The study will complement other studies at the Centre which attempts to understand the ownership of media companies.
